Is There a Deadline for Claiming?

Anton Hilton • November 12, 2020
Insurance is becoming an increasing commonality in today’s world, and for good measure! More and more people are finally opening up to the many benefits it offers and jumping on the insurance bandwagon. But this sudden surge often means that decisions are uninformed, which is why we at Forum Insurance are here to guide you every step of the way – including claims.

Making a claim is the equivalent of crunch time when it comes to insurance policies, and it is necessary for individuals to stick to proper timelines and procedures to maximise their benefit.

Here’s all that you need to know when making a claim.

Making a Claim

So, you’ve found yourself in a situation where you need to make a claim on your insurance policy. Well, that’s alright! After all, isn’t that the whole reason you took out a policy in the first place?

So, how do you go about making a claim? Well, the exact process will differ slightly depending on the type of claim you need to make – home, car, business, the likes, but there are a few general steps that need to be taken.

  1. Never admit to liability or fault. After an accident, sometimes the moments leading up to it are a blur, you might be completely not at fault but by making an admission, you could prejudice your position for the claim.
  2. Check your policy wording! Most policies will have specific conditions you need to follow, this can include reporting to the relevant authorities, or making good on a broken window or door to your home as soon as possible.
  3. Note all the relevant details leading up to and included in the claim. For example you can, take photographers, witness statements,  gather CCTV and contact details of those involved. You can never have too much information.
  4. Gather your documents. You should have your insurance papers on hand as well as relevant personal details and your policy number. You can login to your Forum Insurance Client login account to find your documents.
  5. Call a representative of your insurance policy provider. Once you’re in contact, describe the damage in detail and provide any pictures and accompanying receipts and invoices you gathered before.
  6. Provide details of the insured entity, that is, your car, home, etc.
  7. Follow the steps that our representative gives you.

Before making a call to get your claim process started, it is also a good idea to know what you’re covered for. The more you know, the better you’ll be able to navigate the procedure. To get this information, individuals should take a look at their policy documents as these will clearly list the boundaries of their insurance package.

Does My Claim have a Deadline?

Although it is important to know the basics of making a claim, it is also important to know how long you have to go through the entire process.

A popular question that many individuals ask is whether there is a deadline for claiming. While this will differ from insurance company to insurance company, there is usually a time period within which individuals are required to make their damage claim. However, this deadline is typically quite lenient, with some even extending up to a couple of years.

In any case, however, it is best to make a claim as soon as possible. Not only will this speed up the process of reimbursement for you, but it will also make you likely to receive a bigger payout and avoid the chance of missed deadlines. So, the sooner you can act, the better!

What to Expect Once You’ve made a Claim

So, you’ve gone through the process of making a claim. So, what should you expect now? Surely, you’ll have some questions swimming around in your mind, such as how long will it take for your claim to convert into monetary compensation?

Well, it’s good to be prepared for all sorts of situations, and the first step to that is finding an answer to all of your queries, which is what we’re here for!

Once you’ve made a claim, all that’s left to do is wait. While some lucky individuals may get their claim processed in a matter of days, the typical wait period extends from about four to six weeks.

So, there you have it; the basics for how to go about claims. And remember, the earlier you make a claim, the better!

The Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (Chartered IIA) has seen cybersecurity rank as its top risk for the third year straight. But their survey has also brought new dangers to light with the recent surge of COVID-19 seeing disasters and crisis preparedness ranking as a new top five risk. The results came about after a comprehensive survey of over 570 Chief Audit Executives. Of these, 79% labelled cybersecurity as one of the greatest corporate risks that they had to deal with, whereas 27% labelled it as the single greatest risk. This growing fear of having inadequate cybersecurity has seen a surge with the advent of remote working as individuals and companies are now all the more reliant on technology, making them that much more susceptible to viruses, phishing activities, and malware practices.
