Brexit and Car Insurance: Do You Need A Green Card?

Niraj Mamtora • January 6, 2021

Brexit has affected a lot of policies. It is only natural that one may worry about what their travel insurance policy is going to be like as a result of this. Being a client of Forum Insurance, you will still get cover in all the countries enlisted in the Insurance guide. The duration of the cover is 90 days which can be further extended for an additional 12 weeks (maximum) based on our prior agreement.

However, it has been announced that you must carry a Green Card if you want to drive abroad once the year ends. To be specific, if you drive after December 31 2020. There have been some talks going on regarding other logistics between the EU and the UK during the Brexit transition phase. However, nothing can be said for certain. As soon as there is an update, we will make sure to inform you. You can refer to this page for any updates or also visit the GOV.UK page for any updates regarding this.

What is a Green Card?

Well, a Green Card does not provide evidence that you are under a full insurance policy. However, it is recognised internationally ensuring that you have a minimum level of cover for any personal injury or third-party damage in another country. This does not cover all countries but only the countries which are in the Green Card system.

What countries require the Green Card?

In case the Green Card requirement stays, it is possible that you might need to carry one if you are driving to any of the following countries after 31 December 2020:

  • Countries in the European Economic Area (EEA)
  • Countries in the European Union (EU)
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Andorra
  • Switzerland
  • Serbia

Should I Request A Green Card? If Yes, Then Where?

While there is nothing we can say for sure about traveling abroad until the negotiations have concluded, we know you’ll need a Green Card. You will need a physical copy of the Green Card when traveling in the above countries so we recommend getting one 6 weeks in advance.

You will need to carry extra Green Cards if:

  • If your vehicle insurance policy renews while you're abroad you'll be required to have a Green Card (one for each policy)
  • You're towing a caravan or a trailer (one for the towing vehicle and one for the caravan or trailer)
  • Have multi-car or fleet insurance (one for each vehicle on the policy)

Will my insurance provide cover for the countries listed above after Brexit?

Your insurance policy will still provide you cover if you drive in any of the countries listed above post Brexit. However, we still do not know what the final conclusion of the talks would be. Therefore, there is a chance you could be breaking the law if you are driving an automobile in Europe and do not have the Green Card on you. Moreover, as a consequence of this, the authorities could seize your vehicle, and you might have to face a fine. We recommend keeping up to date with our blog to find out the developments.

The Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (Chartered IIA) has seen cybersecurity rank as its top risk for the third year straight. But their survey has also brought new dangers to light with the recent surge of COVID-19 seeing disasters and crisis preparedness ranking as a new top five risk. The results came about after a comprehensive survey of over 570 Chief Audit Executives. Of these, 79% labelled cybersecurity as one of the greatest corporate risks that they had to deal with, whereas 27% labelled it as the single greatest risk. This growing fear of having inadequate cybersecurity has seen a surge with the advent of remote working as individuals and companies are now all the more reliant on technology, making them that much more susceptible to viruses, phishing activities, and malware practices.

Underinsurance is a common issue that leaves the policyholder with many financial difficulties. In layman terms, underinsurance means that the policyholder is left with insufficient insurance coverage, which makes them responsible for paying a higher percentage of the total loss suffered. For instance, if a homeowner is underinsured and some sort of significant damage occurs, the payout might not be adequate to repair things. Similarly, if the policyholder has insufficient health insurance, they can go into medical debt or even bankruptcy in case of a severe illness or an accident. So, what do you need to do to avoid underinsurance? Well, here are some useful tips to save yourself the trouble of being underinsured!
