Fly-Tippers Taking Advantage During Pandemic
Anton Hilton • June 28, 2020

Many of us are adhering to government guidelines and keeping our family safe. Yet, some people are taking advantage and dumping rubbish.
In just the first week of lockdown, there was a rise of 54% nationwide of images sent to ClearWaste (an app to report fly-tipping).
And while it has been difficult with the number of online on order increasing, and the closure of recycling platforms and tips. This practice puts people and animals in danger.
There have been lanes and roads blocked to emergency service vehicle access, which poses a risk to the paramedic and the patient.
Not only that but for the council staff and farmers who then have to clean it up.
In most places, household bin collections have continued throughout the lockdown. Though more than a quarter of councils have stopped collecting garden waste. And while the government would like the waste recycling centre to remain open, many have closed because of the difficulties in ensuring social distances.
Unfortunately, the responsibility of the dumped rubbish lands on the person who owns the property. So it is also the landowner who must bear the cost of having it removed. Fly-tipping is particularly increasing for farmers and landowners. People are driving away from home and putting their rubbish on fields and lanes. Legal responsibility to dispose of this waste and cover the cost can be monumental.
And of course, most don’t want to spend the hard and money cleaning up someone else’s mess. Ensuring that the location is secure is a significant deterrent. However with the increasing cost to legally dispose of waste it makes sense to make sure that you are insured, and that your insurance provides fly-tipping cover.
There is a jail sentence of five years or a maximum fine of £50,000 for anyone called fly-tipping. However, it does not seem to have put people off during COVID-19. Not only is fly-tipping ugly on the landscape, but it also poses a risk to the environment and human health.
So now is the perfect opportunity to discuss your insurance cover, look for a great quote to make sure that you are fully protected.
