An introduction to Fleet Insurance

Robert Brown • March 20, 2019

There are many businesses throughout the UK that own multiple vehicles, from cars to vans and even HGVs. Some of these businesses rely heavily on these vehicles to carry out their daily operations, making the maintenance of a fleet of vehicles quite the task.

One way to simplify the management of multiple vehicles is through fleet insurance, so we’ve decided to fill you in on the need to know information on this type of cover, whether it’s suitable for your business and some of the benefits.

What is fleet insurance?

To put it simply, fleet insurance allows you to cover all of your commercial vehicles under one policy. Fleet insurance usually covers companies with more than 3 vehicles, but regardless of the size of your fleet, you should be able to find a policy to cover your needs. Not only would this policy cover a variety of vehicles, but it would also cover the number of drivers using your vehicles for business purposes.

The obvious upside to purchasing a fleet insurance policy is the time you’ll save and the reduction in paperwork as you will only need to organise one policy. You could also potentially save yourself some money as you may receive a discount for insuring multiple vehicles through the same provider.

Types of fleet insurance

Determining the right policy for your fleet is dependent on the usage of your vehicles. For a tradesman who carries their tools from one job to another, ‘carriage of own goods’ cover would be suitable, a fleet of taxis would require public or private hire insurance and a courier vehicle making multiple deliveries each day would need courier van insurance.

Once you’ve decided on the type of fleet insurance that is best suited for your business, it is also worth considering some of the add-ons that may be available to you, such as ‘Legal expenses benefit’ which covers any legal expenses incurred as a result of damages done or an ‘open drive’ clause which can cover multiple employees behind the wheel and not just those employed to drive.

Purchasing the right cover for your business

There are many more different types of fleet insurance, so it’s important that when choosing a policy for your business that you don’t just shop online for the cheapest quote. Speak to Forum Insurance about the specific needs of your business and get the right cover you, eliminating the risk of being under-insured.

The Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (Chartered IIA) has seen cybersecurity rank as its top risk for the third year straight. But their survey has also brought new dangers to light with the recent surge of COVID-19 seeing disasters and crisis preparedness ranking as a new top five risk. The results came about after a comprehensive survey of over 570 Chief Audit Executives. Of these, 79% labelled cybersecurity as one of the greatest corporate risks that they had to deal with, whereas 27% labelled it as the single greatest risk. This growing fear of having inadequate cybersecurity has seen a surge with the advent of remote working as individuals and companies are now all the more reliant on technology, making them that much more susceptible to viruses, phishing activities, and malware practices.
